• Put on jewellery last, after you've finished using make-up, hairspray and perfume.
• Remove jewellery first when you undress, so chains, bracelets and earrings don't get caught in your clothes and damaged.
• Don't wear jewellery in the bath or shower, where it can come into contact with bath oils.
• Don't wear jewellery whilst swimming - chlorine and salt water can cause damage.

Storage

• Invest in a jewellery case with separate compartments.
• Wrap pearls separately to protect them.
• Store chains flat.
• Different types of gemstones should be stored separately - they vary in hardness and the more fragile stones may get scratched.

Cleaning

As you wear your jewellery, it inevitably gathers a build-up of natural oils from your skin. Silver and nine carat gold can also be tarnished by sulphur compounds in the atmosphere. So regular cleaning is essential:

• Have porous stones professionally cleaned.
• Wash most jewellery in a warm solution of washing up liquid, brush lightly around the settings with a soft toothbrush, then rinse and pat dry.
• Wipe imitation pearls with a damp cloth, rubbing them gently to remove any dirt.
• Clean silver and nine carat gold with a jewellery dip.
• Never wash porous stones.
• Don't use a jewellery dip for fashion jewellery, as it will damage the plating.
